So…you just started a new business, and you’re excited about the possibilities. Now that you’re in business, what do you SAY to people to let them know about your new venture? If you’re like most people – MYSELF INCLUDED – you fall into one of three categories:
- You have no idea what to say to potential customers and team members, so you don’t do anything.
- You’re SO EXCITED about your new business that you verbally “throw up” on everyone you know, and scare everyone away.
- You don’t think you know enough yet, don’t know “everything” yet, aren’t “successful enough” yet, or dozens of other excuses…so you don’t do anything.
As for me, I was in that second category…I just didn’t know when to shut my mouth, and I scared people away. Even now, YEARS after launching my business, I still find myself rambling on sometimes…YIKES!
The good news is, regardless of which category – or categories – you can relate to, you CAN succeed in this business! For today, we’ll just tackle that first one: what to say.
One of the things that stops people from making that list and then actually contacting people about the business is fear of what to say.
- How do I introduce my new business?
- What questions will they have? And how do I answer their questions?
- What objections will they have? And how do I overcome those objections?
Your company training materials and your upline will be a great source of information on all of these. When introducing your new business, remember: you are NOT a professional sales person…you are simply sharing information.
“Hey Joe, I don’t know if you would be interested but I have started a new business from home, and if it’s okay with you, I’d like to drop off some information for your review so that you’ll know more about what I am doing, in case you come across anyone who might be a match for my business. Would that be all right?”
No pressure here. Just asking a question. The key is to avoid saying anything specific about your business unless you are asked. Why? This keeps curiosity high for when you drop off that information…they’ll be wondering “What is it?”
And, at any time, if someone in your warm market expresses a desire to know more, you’ll take him or her right through the 3 step system. Stick to the tools.
“Hey, Joe. I wanted to let you know I just started my own Internet business. If I give you my website, would you take a quick look? After reviewing the information, if you know of or run into anyone who might be right for my business, I would appreciate the referrals.”
What your friends, family and acquaintances do after the initial introduction is up to them, so don’t worry about the outcome. Get busy using lots of different techniques and you’ll have plenty of people looking at your business.
SUCCESS TIP: Keep it simple. Keep it casual. Create curiosity by sharing information and asking questions. Only share more with people that express an interest.
Whatever you do, don’t trash your reputation by continuing to call, cajole, or beg your friends to take a look. Be a professional and you’ll get professional results. Follow up casually every 3 or 4 months, because timing and changes do happen with people.
